Got Hope? The animals of Anapra, Mexico Do!

divider

Read the harrowing stories of individual animals helped via CWOB’s innovative clinic in Anapra, Mexico – one of Mexico’s poorest regions.

Anapra is a region so wrought with tragedy it is difficult to behold. The poverty is staggering and the animal suffering that has developed as a byproduct so severe it is hard to describe. CWOB continues to bring hope and humane reform to this area, where animals literally starve to death and die of preventable disease and parasitism every day.

Our innovative program, Project Anapra, has literally brought hope to the hopeless and touched hundreds of lives already, bringing these animals tenderness, medical care, nutrition and a chance at a life worth living.

We thought we’d share just a few of the stories of the lives that have been touched and saved by this inspirational program.

Welnes clinicCanela: When Canela first arrived to the clinic in Anapra she weighted just 38 lbs and was all skin and bones. Canela had an infected uterus which was removed when she was spayed, was treated with antibiotics, dewormed, vaccinated, and her owners were given lots of high quality food to help her to bulk back up. After a month of treatment and steady nutrition she had gained a remarkable 20lbs! She is now a robust, healthy, and strong dog that would not have been alive if not for the medical care and support she received at the clinic.

Lola:
Lola came to the clinic after spending 2-3 days in labor with a puppy stuck in her birth canal. Exhausted and near death, she arrived at the clinic with barely enough energy to life her head. She was given intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and an emergency cesarean surgery wherein 3 pups were saved. Lola spent the night at the clinic and was discharged the next morning. She has come back several times for vaccinations and post-operative care and is reportedly doing great and made a very good mother!

Sammy:
Sammy was brought to the clinic by the children in the household where he lives. He was so matted he could not walk, his eyes were completely covered over, his nails were so overgrown they had grown back into the pad, and the matts were so severe they were pulling at his skin and causing large sores. Clinic staff demanded the children have their parents return to discuss Sammy’s condition and they ultimately relinquished Sammy to the clinic staff, stating they did not want him and he had just been hanging around their yard. Sammy was clipped, cleaned, and ended up as a happy, frisky, bright-eyed rescue dog who was adopted out to a new, loving family that showed him the compassion, warmth, and love he deserves.

Lupe:
Lupe arrived to the clinic severely emaciated and dehydrated. She was treated with IV fluids with vitamins, basic dewormer, and some other very basic medical care and completely recovered. She had a severe hookworm infestation { a common intestinal parasite} that was successfully eradicated with just about $2.00 worth of deworming medicine!

Dog With MangeMange:
Examples of the numerous dogs we treat at the clinic that have mange, a common, contagious skin disease. Mange causes the dogs to lose hair, is intensely itchy, and more often than not leads to secondary bacterial skin infections. Furthermore, animals with mange are actually contagious to people and, because of this, many are abandoned and banished from their homes.

Tragically, it is widely believed in many communities throughout Mexico that motor oil will kill mange, leading to many animals getting poisoned by being doused with the oil which is toxic to their system. We’ve treated dozens of animals that have been covered in motor oil and have worked hard to educate the community about the dangers of this practice and the safe, effective alternative we are able to offer them.

Chucho

Chucho: Meet Chucho, a young dog that was unable to walk after being hit by a car and breaking two of his legs. His family refused to give up on him and made this special cart to move him around in and get him to the clinic.

Chucho required two separate surgeries for his injuries, but after a few months recuperation and diligent aftercare from his devoted family, he was walking again!

TVT:
This is an example of Transmissable Venereal Tumor – a painful, sexually transmitted disease that, if left untreated, leads to prolonged, long suffering death. This disease is virtually unheard of in the United States, but is quite rampant in Mexico where dogs breed uncontrollably on the streets and have little access to medical care.

Fortunately, this terrible condition is on that is completely curable {and 100% reversable} with a series of weekly chemotherapy injections. The Anapra clinic has successfully cured 19 dogs of this horrific disease and currently has another four enrolled in the weekly injection protocol.
