Freedom for Frida!
A tale of a 3-legged Meximutt and her rough travels toward the good life

Let’s just say that pretty much everyone who has had the honor of meeting sweet Frida immediately wants to adopt her – seriously, everyone. With her deep chocolate brown eyes, reddish-brown highlights, and slinky Dachshund cross body, it is hard not to fall in love immediately and completely.

She gives love quite freely, absorbs it like an insatiable sponge, and gives very soft, sweet kisses that make you feel like she has chosen you, and only you, as her heart’s companion.

It was early April in Juarez, a time when the heat begins to set in around the desert town, when Frida was first rescued. Frida was found hobbling around the streets with an injury to her left rear leg so horrific it was hard to bear witness to -- a large portion of the leg had been completely skinned and the bone was painfully exposed and infected. Frida was very thin, clearly in pain, and just barely managing to continue her struggle to survive when she had the good fortune of being spotted by a local volunteer, Veronica Murillo.

Frida was scooped off the street and in that moment her life changed forever. She was given the medical attention she so desperately required, shelter, food, and showered with love and attention. Sadly, Frida did lose the rear leg that was so badly injured.

Frida dog rescue pictureI met Frida just a week or so after she was rescued and still in the recovery process.
She was still very thin, a bit wobbly on her three legs, and very sweet – yet clearly not yet trusting of all things human. As is known to happen in her presence, I immediately lost all rational thought, fell madly in love, and insisted that I should take her home and foster her myself while she finished her recovery process and prepared for adoption.

That was about three weeks ago and Frida is now a totally different dog.

Frida, whose appetite is a force to be reckoned with, has gained considerable weight, become well muscled, and developed not only stability but downright grace on her three sweet little legs. She runs around the backyard with speed and agility, romps with the other dogs, and exudes a calm serenity that seems a reflection of the hard life she’s weathered and the endurance and strength it took on her part to make it through to the other side.

Frida is wise. Frida is dignified. Frida is pure sweet love. She trusts and loves everyone she meets now at first sight and greets each day and every moment with enthusiasm, dignity, and a nearly tangible gratitude.

To know her is to love her and to have been able to help her out of her misery and suffering is a blessing beyond compare.

Freedom for Frida didn’t come easy, but alas it has arrived and she now has a long, happy life ahead of her that just a few short weeks ago would have seemed impossible.
