Community Project Brings Journey Full Circle for CWOB Cofounder Christi Camblor
-Dr.Christi Camblor
There are moments in your life that change everything. Experiences that suddenly uproot you and leave you destined to take a new path. For me, one such moment was the first time I entered the neighborhood called Anapra, just outside of the border town of Juarez.
I had been working with animals in Mexico for over a year when I arrived in Anapra back in 2002. I thought I had a fairly good grasp of the situation and was still in the formative stages of figuring out how I could best help.
And then came Anapra.
Anapra, a community so poor that most houses have neither floors, nor doors – no electricity, no plumbing. A shanty town of immense poverty. The kind of third world conditions you imagine in India or Africa, not less than 1/8 mile from the US border – which is where Anapra is located.
Amidst this harsh landscape I found myself beholding animals in conditions so poor it brought me to my knees. Starving, literally starving animals everywhere. Skin and bones. Diseased, filthy, scrounging creatures at every corner. Covered in dust and mange. Scrounging every minute of every day just to survive.
I felt deep down that I had to do something, anything, everything…I knew I had to help.
CWOB went on to hold free week-long spay and neuter clinics in Anapra no less than 6 times over the next few years – sterilizing more than one thousand animals free of charge and vaccinating even more.
And then, we formulated Project Anapra {full description here} with the hope of bringing about real change and just within the past few months found a portion of the funding to carry it out – a dream come true for me personally.
Just las t Saturday, February 9th, I was present for one of the very first free health clinics for Project Anapra. 70 animals arrived to the clinic within a few hours and we were able to offer free vaccinations, deworming, mange, flea, and tick control, antibiotics, wound care, etc to each one. Additionally, we signed up more than 40 animals for the free sterilization clinic in nearby Juarez and will be sending out a van each Thursday to pick them up for the surgeries.
Project Anapra is amazing. It has enabled all of us touched by the animals that live there to really make a difference – improving their health, providing them with basic nutrition, helping to alleviate their needless suffering.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
You can sponsor an animal in Anapra! We have secured just a portion of the funding to help animals in this community, but don’t have anywhere near enough to help them all. Please sponsor a cat or dog for just $50.00. Your contribution will enable us to provide your sponsor animal with
• Sterilization
• Vaccination
• Parasite control
• Mange treatment
• Collar, ID tag, leash
• Food
Please help make the difference in the live of one of these animals – if each of our supporters can just help one we can transform this community!
