When One Equals Five
A narrowly escaped euthanasia for an injured dog turns into a five fold happy ending!
She was being carried to the euthanasia table. Like most of the dogs at the animal control center in Chihuahua, Mexico, she was in terrible condition. Covered in matts, you could barely make out the dog underneath. Her entire coat was one giant tangle covered in filth, feces, and debris.
As she was being placed on the table, next in line for euthanasia, CWOB cofounder Moncho Camblor walked into the room, watched as Gabriella kissed the hand of the man holding her. There was no question in his mind --he knew he had to save her.
And so, he did.
Gabriella had been spared her fate at the table and was safely tucked away with the other CWOB rescue dogs by the time Moncho realized she was severely injured. He brushed aside one of the matts covering her face and was horrified to realize that one of Gabriella’s eyes had been severely injured and was actually painfully displaced out of the orbit.
Gabriella was rushed to a veterinary clinic run by CWOB partners in Juarez, Mexico where she was to undergo surgery, quarantine, grooming, etc. It was very late by the time Moncho arrived, so he cleaned her off as best he could, fed her a big dinner, and tucked her in for the night.
The next morning when veterinary staff came in to check on her, they were surprised to find five dogs in her cage instead of one – Gabriella had given birth overnight. Gabriella met staff with a wagging tail and four absolutely gorgeous baby pups nursing away.
Gabriella was given the medical attention she needed, which included removal of the injured eye, a complete clip job, vaccinations, deworming and some minor wound care. Meanwhile, her puppies continue to thrive and she has proven herself to be quite a dedicated mother. Gabriella keeps her babies meticulously clean, nurses them without complaint, and patiently tolerates all their roughhousing and careless romps.
Gabriella will be coming to California in a few short weeks along with the fabulous foursome where all five deserving dogs will find their way into loving homes thanks to Small Dog Rescue.
