Dear Friend

Sad dog In the Antirrabico in Ciudad Juarez MexicoCompassion w/o Borders just got back from a weekend in Juarez, Mexico that was filled with site visits, meetings, rescue selections, animal control inspections, and making plans for our next spay camp that will take place in a few short weeks. It was a whirlwind, as usual, filled with tremendous success and inspiration.

I must admit, the inspections at the local animal control center where we have instituted the humane euthanasia program always leave me deeply saddened. Although the animals are now being much more humanely housed and euthanized, the ones that find their way to the facility are often in horrific conditions, thin and covered in mange, diseased and frightened -- all with that distinct tragic stare of an animal that has struggled all their lives, never knowing even one moment of human kindness or mercy. We selected several dogs for our next rescue, which is a process as bitter as it is sweet. Picking who lives and who is left behind is always devastating.

Every time I see the faces of the animals in Mexico, each time I am confronted with the brutality of the suffering, every pair of lonely eyes I cannot help remind me of the urgent importance of our work and remind me to thank all of our supporters who allow us to bring about the humane reform that is needed. I remind myself of all the progress we have made through citywide spay/neuter, humane education, international rescue efforts, and humane euthanasia programs.

And, it is most definitely true that for every tragedy, there is also a story of hope. I encourage you to read those stories of hope we've included here and, as always, thanks.

Mom Dog in Anapra Mexico Spay and neuter ClinicOur next Spay and Neuter Clinic, which will be held during the last week in March, will take place in Anapra, a suburb of Juarez which is home to the city’s poorest residents. We plan on offering free sterilizations, vaccinations, and other wellness services to roughly 300 animals in our weeklong visit and are bringing a large team of US volunteer veterinarians and vet students to work alongside local advocates, veterinarians, and veterinary students at the clinic. Stationary Spay/Neuter Clinic in Juarez sterilizing animals by the hundreds!

Spay and Neuter ClinicCWOB recently visited the free sterilization clinic we oversee in Juarez. The clinic offers high quality, high volume, free spay/neuter services to low resource families in Juarez. We were very impressed by the Juarez clinic and the great team of veterinarians and vet techs that work there each day, bringing the spay/neuter solution to the city of Juarez.
