Humane Euthanasia Trainings Continue

Humane euthanasia is a tough area to work in for animal lovers. We are folks who dedicate our lives to saving animals, so it is always hard to accept euthanasia – on any terms. Tragically, we are nowhere near being able to save all the unwanted animals in  Mexico and so euthanasia remains a necessary component of our work.

Electrocution MachineOur humane euthanasia program, which aims to eradicate electrocution and replace it with humane euthanasia by injection as practiced in the United States, has enabled us to bring about reform to animal control centers in Mexico where conditions are typically absolutely atrocious.

Such was the case most recently when we visited an animal control center in Cuahtemoc, Mexico. Our eyes filled with tears when we first saw the crude fuse box attached to two car battery clamps that was being used to kill animals. Our stomachs turned as we realized this atrocity was in the center of all the cages, such that all the animals were forced to watch as the executions took place.

But that is all over now. Our humane euthanasia training seminar which involved all the center’s employees, the director of the facility, as well as the director of the local department of health, was well received and we were able to successfully end the practice of electrocution at this particular facility.

Dog in poundIn fact, we  convinced the director to dismantle the electrocution box and actually give it to us, so we could be certain no animal would ever be subjected to that torture again.

Our humane euthanasia program, which is now in place throughout the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, also includes strategies to improve the standards of care for the animals prior to euthanasia, as well.

The thought of these poor animals who have already suffered so much spending their last few minutes in agony while being electrocuted is unbearable. Knowing that thanks to our efforts at least the ones that end up in the facilities we sponsor will be spared that pain and allowed to pass on peacefully and painlessly, provides us with the courage and comfort to continue this project and carry it on to other cities throughout Mexico.

How can you help?
Just a quarter can prevent an animal from being killed by electrocution. It costs just 25 cents to humanely euthanize an animal. Donate here and help us to end electrocution in Mexico.
