Although CWOB is a small, grassroots, all volunteer organization - we get a lot accomplished. Each year our projects grow, and 2005 was our busiest year to date. Check out what we got done:

Partners for A Humane Juarez

Over the past year, CWOB, along with our partners, has been working on a citywide plan to bring about humane reform in the city of Juarez, Mexico. From free sterilization services, to humane euthanasia, to international dog rescues - we are combating the tragedy of overpopulation and companion animal suffering from as many angles as we can think of!

Stopping Random Animal Violence in Acencion, Mexico:dog hurte

In the Spring of 2005, we were made aware of a gruesome practice in Acencion, Mexico: they were routinely rounding up street dogs and holding mass shootings as their sole means of animal control. Compassion without Borders, along with Aprodea decided to go to Ascencion, hold a week-long free spay/neuter clinic, set up ongoing free sterilization services, and were successful in convincing the local government to stop the mass shootings and to look to sterilization as the answer instead!

International Dog Rescue:

Our dog rescue, which saves the lives of dogs slated to be killed in animal control centers in Juarez, saved dozens upon dozens of lovely little mexi-mutts over the past 12 months. The rescue is supported by various partner organizations and is part of a larger project to bring about humane reform in the impoverished border town of Juarez. Check out some of the fabulous faces of our 2006 rescues. We'd like to thank Animal Place for making the rescue possible.

Ending Electrocution in Juarez, Mexico:

antirrabicoUnwanted animals in Juarez, Mexico were being rounded up, wherehoused without food or water, and electrocuted before Compassion without Borders got involved in August, 2004. After seeing the horrific situation firsthand, we decided to rally our partner organizations and convince them to support a complete rehaul of the facility. Thanks to the hard work of our local partners in Juarez, we have been able to completely end electrocution, replacing it with humane intravenous euthanasia. Aprodea also ensures that animals are fed and given water daily.

We also coordinated a humane animal handling and professionalism class for Animal Control Officers in Juarez that was taught by senior officers from the Marin Humane Society.

Additionally, we have begun rescuing dogs from this facility and transporting them to California, where they are adopted out into safe, loving homes!

Giving Veterinary Students the Chance to make a Difference :

In 2006, CWOB brought 8 UC Davis veterinary students to Mexico and provided them with the opportunity to volunteer their time and skills at a free sterilization clinic. The students were exposed to the harsh reality of companion animal overpopulation in Mexico, which was emotionally difficult for some, but all were grateful to be an integral part of the spay/neuter solution. Many plan to come back down for out next clinic in the Spring!
