Wags To Riches

From the slums of one of Mexico’s poorest neighborhoods to the lap of northern California Luxury

Chili, a five pound brindle Chihuahua, was found by CWOB when we were in the impoverished region of Anapra, Mexico doing a spay camp. A man came to the clinic as we were setting up and asked us to come euthanize a dog. He had taken the dog off the side of the road after being hit several days ago and she was agonizing and needed to be put out of her misery.

When we arrived the scene was awful. The dog was in horrible conditions, unable to walk, flies swarming…she was suffering immensely. We quickly euthanized her, grateful to alleviate her pain, but saddened by the entire scene.

As we left, a small little brindle Chihuahua crossed our path. She was thin, she was covered in ticks, she was a mess. We inquired about her and the man told us he had traded one of his pigs for her and was trying to breed her, but she wasn’t producing viable litters. We asked if he would give her to us, but he declined.

As we left, we all did so with heavy hearts. Pulling out of the driveway, we were surpised when the man that brought us there ran out in front of our truck.

He had changed his mind. He insisted we take the Chihuahua and was thanking us for our work and our efforts. He told us her name was Chili.

Chili spent the night with us that first night. We bathed her in the sink at the house where we were staying, pain stakingly picking off ticks and removing the layers of filth that covered her.

The next day at the spay camp a veterinary student volunteering at the clinic fell in love with Chili –love at first sight. Chili took to her immediately and she to Chili. Needless to say, they were inseparable from that point forward and Chili had definitely found her forever home.

Chili now lives with the student, now a doctor, Dr.Sara Harrison, in northern California. She is a pampered pooch with painted nails and more outfits and dog toys than Dr. Harrison cares to admit!
