ONE ISSUE AT A TIME
Transmissible Tumors
There are a handful of health issues facing animals south of the border that are rare and nearly unheard of in dogs and cats in the United States. One such example is a transmissible venereal tumor that is spread when dogs mate. The tumor, which is highly treatable if the dog is given the correct medications, can be fatal if left untreated.
The situation for animals in Mexico, with most being sexually intact and roaming freely on the streets, leads to favorable conditions for this particular tumor and the disease can be quite rampant in some endemic areas. Tragically, there is a common misconception amongst some communities that the tumor is also transmissible to humans and animals with this disease are regularly poisoned or cast out of the home.
The disease can be very painful, leading to incredible suffering if the animals are not given the proper treatment. However, with a series of injections over several weeks, the disease is relatively easy to cure.
Compassion without Borders has been working hard to bring treatment for this particular disease into Mexico and to educate communities about the condition, dispelling common misconceptions and providing great relief to many animals. We have created easy to understand educational literature about the disease for the community members and treated dozens of animals to date, donating the proper medications to local veterinarians and then paying them to carry out the necessary ongoing treatments until the animals is cured.
Treating an animal costs just an average of $75, including veterinary bills and medications and literally saves that animal’s life. The animals we treat are also sterilized, vaccinated, and dewormed.
While we cannot treat every single animal inflicted with this terrible disease, we are helping many individuals and, most importantly, working to promote spay and neuter through our free sterilization clinics, which ultimately will bring about the end to this preventable problem.
How You Can Help:
Sponsor a Spay and Neuter: It costs an average of $25 for an animal to be sterilized at one of our clinics. Spaying just one dog and one cat prevents 67,000 puppies and 420,000 kittens from being born over the next 7 years!
Sponsor treatment for an animal: A donation of $75 will enable us to provide the medical treatment necessary to cure a dog in Mexico of this painful disease.
