MEXI-MUTT OF THE MONTH Zoe

Misery made Beautiful

-Christi Payne, CWOB Cofounder

Zoe Rescue dog from in the streets of MexicoIt was hot and dusty and we were exhausted, having worked several 16-hour days in a row at the spay/neuter clinic in Ascencion, Mexico. As we rounded the dirt road corner in the old pickup we had borrowed for the week, we saw a small skeleton straggling across the street.

She was simply too thin to believe. Covered in mange. So frail it was hard for her to walk. She stumbled several times in the few feet she crossed in front of us. As we got closer, she ran to a small shed and curled up under some burlap sacks. We were able to coax her out and quickly rescue her to the safe confines of our truck and, ultimately, our hotel room.

Zoe in the care of Compassion without BordersZoe was the thinnest animal I have ever seen. Her scabby, itchy, mangey skin was stretched over her skeleton so tight you could make out every protuberance, each and every bump on notch on all her little bones. She was covered in sores. She had barely any hair. Her eyes were nearly crusted shut. Just looking at her was difficult.

We brought Zoe home with us to Animal Place , driving the 24 hour road trip with her and 22 other rescue dogs in a rented cargo van. At first she was so weak I had to syringe liquids and food into her mouth. We gave her some fluids , bathed her, removed her ticks and allowed her to rest. She began to regain her strength and we began to increase her feedings, treat her skin condition, and give her the healing tincture of TLC.

Zoe rescue dog from mexicoIn just four weeks time, Zoe has almost completely recovered. Watching her transformation has been an absolute joy. Her coat is growing back. Her scabs and itchiness have resolved. Her little body has filled in and now there is even a slim layer of padding. Most remarkable, however, has been the change in her expression and her character. She has gone from a little pitiful creature so weak she couldn't even barely stand, to a bright, energetic, affectionate soul so full of energy and life that she brings a smile to the face of everyone she meets. She will be ready to be adopted out in just a few short weeks and will be on the way to the life she deserves - with her past far behind her.

Zoe's story brings all of us at Compassion without Borders the hope and faith we need to continue making a difference and fighting against suffering - around each corner we turn.
