ONE ISSUE AT A TIME
Mexican Animals Speak Out
In this section of our website, we give voice to the animals of Mexico, highlighting the critical issues facing them today. Each month we put a new issue in the spotlight, helping the animals to tell their story and educating you about the campaigns we’re working on to bring about humane reform.
JANUARY’S ISSUE:
Motor Oil Madness!
In some of the impoverished neighborhoods CWOB has worked in throughout Mexico, we’ve encountered a highly toxic, unhealthy method of parasite control for companion animals. The animals in these areas have high exposure to fleas, ticks, and mange. There is a common misbelief that an effective method to rid animals of these ecto-parasites is by covering them in motor oil. Although the people are acting out of good intention and are trying to help these animals, this is a highly toxic, dangerous, and inhumane practice that can be lethal.
We’ve had to wash motor oil off of dozens and dozens of animals, including many small puppies suffering from toxic shock. After encountering this time and time again, CWOB decided to begin a campaign to inform people about the dangers of putting motor oil on their animals. We designed eye-catching posters that warn of its toxicity and educational fact sheets outlining proper parasite treatment. Additionally, we ourselves routinely treat animals for fleas, ticks, and mange free of charge and send the animals home with long term preventatives.
This disturbing issue is a good example of how our grassroots humane education and outreach programs directly improve the lives of animals in Mexico. The vast majority of cruelty and suffering we’re fighting against can be effectively dismantled with innovative educational efforts, and the patient implementation of viable alternatives.
