Faces of Hope: Who we Help and How

The situation for animals south of the bore is so dire that hope can often feel out of reach. It is very easy to become overwhelmed.

Yet, despite the fog of despair which can at first glance seem impenetrable, Compassion without Borders has pushed forward for the past 8 years, bringing about ground level change, grassroots reform, and real hope for the animals of Mexico.

In this section of our website, we share some of the tales of the animals helped by our work to help you understand just exactly who our programs help and how. Together our efforts are making a difference – four paws at a time!

Remember, we are only able to help these animals thanks to the support of donors like you. Even a few dollars can literally save a life south of the border. Donate today.

Pablo
pablo rescue dog
Pablo is a sweet faced Labrador mix that was found by local volunteers in Juarez, Mexico wandering the streets with this horrific injury and very, very thin. When they asked around the local homes, they were told that he had been hanging out for weeks and no one was feeding him or caring for him, he had just been scrounging for food and seeking shelter wherever he could.

Pablo was rescued and given immediate medical orthopedic attention and, amazingly, the injury has responded to treatment and Pablo is thriving. He is in a foster home recovering and will join us on our next rescue trip to northern California for placement.

bobo

Bobo

Sweet little Bobo is a one month old pup that was accidentally stepped on by his mother. The family caring for him had no resources to seek veterinary care, but were able to bring him to our free clinic where he received a full examination, pain medication, and anti-inflammatories. Fortunately, he had no fractures and had just endured soft tissue trauma and healed completely.

wendy dog help in mexicoWendy

Wendy is a classic case of chronic mange that has gone untreated. She had hardly any hair by the time we treated her and was living in misery itching, scratching, and being uncomfortable. She was treated with medicated shampoos, a topical mange treatment, antibioticcs, and is on her way to recovery and a million times more comfortable!

oso at the clinic

Oso

This gorgeous young pup arrived to one of our clinics for routine vaccination and was found to be chalk full of intestinal parasites – roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. These parasites threatened his delicate little life, but were easily eradicated with a simple dewormer. The person that brought Oso to us is handicapped and lives in an extremely impoverished regionf of Mexico. While Oso is a beloved companion, he would not be able to pay the veterinary bills associated with caring for him and traveled over 15 miles to get the free preventative care and treatment for his puppy. Oso will be getting neutered in the next few weeks.

Mona

Mona is a darling little Chihuahua mix that was attacked by a large breed dog that was free roaming in the streets of Mexico. Her injureis were so severe and deep that her trachea {windpipe} and esophagus were exposed. She was given reconstructive surgery at our free clinic and lots of medical support and aftercare. She has recovered beautifully and subsequently made a complete recovery.

Blackie

Sweet Blackie presented to our free clinic back in July after having been ill for over 2 weeks. She was anemic, weak, and barely able to stand. The family that brought her to the clinic had been trying a variety of “home remedies” {this is very common in Mexico}, as they could not afford veterinary care and she was gravely ill.

At the free clinic, Blackie was diagnosed with Ehrlichea, a tick born disease. She was given IV fluid therapy, started on the appropriate 21 day course of antibiotics, and, fortunately, made a full recovery.

Blackie’s family is very grateful and Blackie is scheduled to be sterilized in early September at the free clinic.

canelaCanela

Canela was brought into our free clinic in Anapra after having been in labor for days. She had given birth to four pups, three of which ha survived. Canela had become increasingly weak and could no longer stand and was trembling by the time she was brought into the clinic where she was diagnosed with life threatening hypocalcemia and dehydration.

Canela was given the medical treatment she needed and quickly stabilized. She was discharged with the appropriate medications and returned a few months later to be spayed, along with her three pups!

chamu back injuryChamu

Chamu is a darling dog that was rescued after having endured what appears to have been either severe chemical or thermal burns all over his back. Chamu’s injuries were a few weeks old and severely infected. He required an emergency surgery to clean up the infected areas and remove the dead tissue.

The surgery was successful, Chamu was treated aggressively with pain control, antibiotics, and bandages and has subsequently made a complete recovery – although he will always have a prominent scar from the injury.

Sweet Chamu is currently in foster in Juaerz and will be heading to California in late September for adoption.

gueraGuera

Poor Guera arrived to our free clinic starving, anemic and very weak. She was diagnosed with a treatable tick borne disease and treated accordingly with a 21 day course of life saving antibiotics that cost just about $2.00.

Thank goodness Guera made it to our clinic, we are so grateful to have been able to save her life.
