The End of Electrocution in Sonora?

Many of you know that, sadly, electrocution is still the primary method of killing homeless dogs and cats in animal control centers south of the border. {read more about electrocution here} CWOB has been working hard to change that for nearly a decade.

After starting with our first humane euthanasia project in our pilot program in Juarez in 2004, we quickly expanded throughout the state of Chihuahua and by 2006 had successfully secured an agreement with the government to stop electrocution throughout the entire state – the first state, to our knowledge, to eradicate the practice south of the border.

We’ve been working in neighboring cities in the neighboring state of Sonora ever since, trying hard to bring an end to the brutal practice, and just last month did a large training in Puerto Penasco, Sonora. The heads of the Secretary of Health were in attendance and we are thrilled to report they agreed to formalize an agreement to halt electrocution all together throughout the state!

We will be returning to Puerto Penasco in the middle of November for a large free spay/neuter and veterinary wellness clinic and hope to make progress toward the plan to implement the agreement as soon as possible.

Many thanks to Jim and Mary Schwebel, and the Minneapolis law firm of “Schwebel, Goetz & Sieben”, whose compassion for the animals of Mexico and support enabled us to host the training in Puerto Penasco and who are a very large part of this amazing step forward for the animals.
