WAGS TO RICHES

Dog Chain in Juarez

It is cold in Juarez in early November. Bone chilling cold. The thousands of homeless animals that roam the streets are forced to fend for themselves and seek shelter where they can. The animals that are rounded up at the local animal control center are all housed outdoors and local volunteers scramble to round up dog sweaters, blankets, and towels to try to help ward off the sometimes freezing temperatures.

The 12 dogs that were plucked out of Juarez on November 3rd and delivered to California via our international rescue program had overcome a lot more than cold weather in their lives. Most come from backgrounds of neglect or cruelty and all would have faced certain death at the animal control center had they not beaten the odds and been chosen as part of our rescue.

The Compassion without Borders rescue program saves dogs slated to be killed at the local animal control center in Juarez. We also rescue from cruelty cases and occasionally take animals living on the streets. We select dogs that we feel are highly adoptable and place them in a quarantine where they are vaccinated, dewormed, and sterilized. We then load them up in a van and begin the long drive back to California with them where they are adopted out into loving homes via our various partner organizations.

All of the November rescue dogs have been adopted out and will be spending their first Christmas North of the border, warm, safe, and adored. Far from the cold streets of Juarez, each dog is a true holiday miracle.

Please read the stories of each of the dogs below and please consider sponsoring another Mexican rescue dog so that we can create more happy endings in 2007

Pelucha:

Pelucha is adorable. She is fluffy, friendly, and very feminine. She was rescued from the local animal control center in Juarez and fostered in a local volunteer’s home until we were able to bring her back to California where she was adopted out through our fantastic partner organization Small Dog Rescue

Kiko:

Kiko Rescue dogCome on. This dog is so cute it hurts. Weighing in at a whopping 4 lbs, he may be little but his small stature is matched by a huge personality. This little dog was rescued from the local animal control center in Juarez, where local volunteers found him very frightened and uncertain. Once he was safe in a foster home, his personality began to shine. He is a sweet little soul that demands attention and respect wherever he goes.

When Heather Maddison, a fantastic CWOB supporter and highly skilled veterinary technician, met him in Mexico while volunteering at a spay camp, it was love at first sight. Heather worried about how she would get him back to her hometown in New York, but CWOB found a way and Kiko now lives there happily with Heather and her other Chihuahua "Chico".

Manolito:

Manolito Rescue DogJuan Jose is one of the fantastic veterinarians we have had the privilege to work with in Juarez. Last August, while performing humane euthanasia at the local animal control center, a certain white shaggy dog caught his eye and he just didn’t have the heart to euthanize him.

Something about Manolitio’s sweet face moved Juan Jose and he knew that once CWOB saw him we would feel the same way. So, Juan Jose pulled Manolito out of the animal control center, groomed him, and sent his striking photos to CWOB asking if there was a place for him on our next rescue list.

When we saw the photos we understood why Juan Jose had made the special save. We agreed to bring Manolito back to California for our rescue, and that is just what we did. Manolito is an adorable younger dog full of life, love, and energy. He is energetic, but gentle and respectful. He has his whole life ahead of him. We are so grateful to Juan Jose for selecting him for our rescue.

Greñas:

Grenas Rescue DogThis is our kind of dog! Little, wire-haired scruffy Mexican mutt. Sweet, forlorn eyes that make you melt within seconds of meeting her. The only thing cuter than this dog’s irresistible exterior is her sweeter than sweet interior and charming disposition. Rescued from a cruelty case in Juarez, she never looked back and was eager to trust again. She was adopted out thanks to the Peninsula Humane Society in the Bay Area and is now living in a loving home.

Sally:

Sally Rescue DogWhen Sally was found at the Mexican animal control center she was a truly tragic sight. Covered in mange and scabs, she was shivering in the back of a cold cement cage. She was very thin and frightened.
Local volunteers scooped her up immediately and began giving her treatment for all of her medical issues. In just a few short weeks, with a few basic medications and lots of TLC, she had regrown her coat and was coming out of her shell. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a local volunteer who took Sally on as a project foster, she soon became a gorgeous little Chihuahua.
Sally remained a bit timid, but was extremely sweet and affectionate once she knew she could trust you. When we rescued her, we knew that it would take someone special to find her the perfect home. We asked one of our most trusted partner groups, Small Dog Rescue, if they would help her and they said yes immediately.
Sally is now living in a fantastic home in Northern California and is pampered and cherished, just as any self-respecting Chihuahua should be!

Kobi:

Koby Rescue DogDogs like Kobi are hard to find. He is not only devastatingly handsome, but also incredibly gentle and well mannered. His soft temperament and inquisitive disposition make him absolutely irresistible. He was rescued from Juarez Animal Control and we are so grateful to have played a role in saving his life. He seems to us to be an old soul trapped in young, adorable dog’s body and he is truly a one in a million little pooch.
